What's the best and safest way to send money from the US to Germany?
I need to transfer some funds to Germany, since I'll be moving there soon permanently and I wanna make sure that my money gets there safely. What's the best way to go about that? Should I leave my bank accounts open here in the US until I have transferred all my money over there and THEN close them? Can I even close them, once I'm over there? First,I would need to open an account over there, right? Well, how do I do that? Can I do that online while I'm still in the States or how does that work exactly? We're not talking pocket change here,it'll be my lifesavings, etc. What about taxes and stuff? Anyone know anything about that sorta thing? Thanks.

It would easiest if you already had a bank account set up in Germany. If that was the case you would do a wire transfer from your US account to zero it out and close it at the same time. Your US bank can help with that. The five largest German banks are Deutsche Bank, Dresdner Bank, Westdeutsche Landesbank, Commerzbank, and the Bayerische Vereinsbank. It may be possible to open an account in Germany before you go. Contact the US rep offices of these banks to see they can arrange this for you. Good luck!
