Should We Make Other Countries Pay for Their Own Defense?
The  USA spends about $10 billion a year keeping troops in places like  Germany and Japan to protect against an invasion by the Soviet Union -- a  country that doesn't exist anymore. Why don't we scale back and let  these countries pay for their own defense? Certainly, the USA needs to  save money. We are saddling the next generation with a crushing debt. We  are now one of the world's top five debtor nations. We borrow money  from China in order to defend countries that that can afford to pay for  it themselves. Does this make sense?

Japan  drafted a constitution after the U.S. occupation after ww2. In article 9  it reads something like "land, sea, and air forces, as well as other  war potential, will never be maintained,".  The German military is known as the Bundeswehr. They are a member of  NATO. They can defend themselves.  I agree with you. Japan should amend their constitution and every one  else should be in charge of their own defense. A lot of countries don't  even like us. It isn't our responsibility to maintain peace.
