Should We Make Other Countries Pay for Their Own Defense?
The USA spends about $10 billion a year keeping troops in places like Germany and Japan to protect against an invasion by the Soviet Union -- a country that doesn't exist anymore. Why don't we scale back and let these countries pay for their own defense? Certainly, the USA needs to save money. We are saddling the next generation with a crushing debt. We are now one of the world's top five debtor nations. We borrow money from China in order to defend countries that that can afford to pay for it themselves. Does this make sense?

Japan drafted a constitution after the U.S. occupation after ww2. In article 9 it reads something like "land, sea, and air forces, as well as other war potential, will never be maintained,". The German military is known as the Bundeswehr. They are a member of NATO. They can defend themselves. I agree with you. Japan should amend their constitution and every one else should be in charge of their own defense. A lot of countries don't even like us. It isn't our responsibility to maintain peace.
