What is an awesome bike these days?

What is an awesome bike these days?
Giant, KHS, Trek, Globe. All sound like wonderful brands. Trek makes at least one bike in the USA. Which one would you recommend? Can I find any quality bike made in Canada, the States, or Europe or Japan? Why does it HAVE to come from Taiwan? The Chinese already make enough money off of us. Why not give other countries a chance for fair trade. Aren't there any bikes that I can get from Germany, Holland, or some other place in Western Europe? I'm looking for a road bike that is durable, light weight and competitively priced. Also how do I get bicycle insurance? Who offers it?

Heed this advice... Go with your gut instinct, in buying a good bike. More $$ does NOT = More quality. I found that out the hard way. First off, lemme tell you that I am in no way a bycicle guru... And also know that I am usually not a big-buck spender (I'm actually known to be quite "cheap" by my friends' standards, 90% of the time, or so). But I decided to really get into biking last summer. And dog-gonnet, I wanted to have one of the best damn bikes on the road, regardless of cost!...Now, normally, I'd consider spending upward to $200 for a good-quality bike. But I decided to really research it, and really cough up the big bucks, swallow my pride about being financially responsible, and go splurge my money on the great-quality bike! I coughed up $400 on a Gary Fisher bike (made by Trek). Why did I spend $400 on a Gary Fisher bike??? Because I asked multiple friends who were serious into biking, as well as browsed enthusiast sites online, as well as visiting and asking SIX different local bike stores......they all agreed that, without spending $1,000 or more, Gary Fisher was pretty much my best choice. Well....guess what. That $400 bike has had it's seat FALL OFF WHILE I RODE IT (off-road, but cerrrrrtainly not any extremem stunts...just a calm hilly dirt path), brake problems, and now I believe I have a bent back rim because my back brakes pulsate when I squeeze them. And overall, I hear a "click"ing noise every time I apply a decent amount of pressure on my first pedal as I get started... So yeeeeeeah.....$400.....for a bike who's quality is well below what I had a couple years ago in a bike that costed $150?????? Is it worth it???? NO!!!! Honestly, just go with your gut instincts... If you really think it's going to be worth it - cough up some $$.... If you honestly feel good about a cheaper bike that looks and feels great....go with that one. It'll probly be easier and more relaxing on your conscious to know you saved $250 on your initial purchase, even if you have to replace a couple parts over the next few years for a few bucks here and there. Good luck, dude. (Oh....and.... for the sake of men everywhere....get a big wide cushy gel-seat...your rump and your boys will thank you later)

Look at Santa Cruz bikes. Many components come from Asia, and some from Europe and the US. The main reason fro this is that the majority of bikes and components are sold there. Bike insurance is probably covered under your homeowners or renters policy. Check with your agent to see if it is covered.

Cannondale is still made in the USA. Some others are made in Italy - Maybe Pinarello or Bianchi or MAssi -Fexarri - Torelli - Mondonico - but not sure they are all made in italy. I am sure there are others too. Maybe you can find an 07 bike in a shop - here are the '07 steel ones from Bianchi - http://www.bianchiusa.com/07_road.html
4 :
Have you actually ridden any of the bikes you mention? You would be amazed at how many bike frames[good frames] are welded in taiwan, good frames welded to specs. You want a custom frame? Try Mark Beaver in Halifax nova scotia. He will weld you what you want.[Cyclesmith novascotia]I do hope you like steel. Just a shot in the dark, and I wish you luck

There are two words that are not compatible.. european bikes and competitively priced. THe point of making bikes in Taiwan is basically lower costs more sales and more revenue. I happen to have an Specialized Tarmac SL made in taiwan and is one, if no the best bike that ive owned (previously C-40 Coast Issue, CT-2, Trek 5900). I used to have a Colnagos and right know im still wondering how in the hell i paid that amoutn of money for a bike. Trek basically manufactures bikes in the US based on Pride... however that doesnt make them any better than other brands. On the other side try go get a BMC, Colnago, Look, Guerciotti, Daccorrdi.. with the price of an european frames you can get a full Trek, Giant or Specialized bike. But if you have the cash and want to roll in style go ahead.
6 :
trust me go with a redline or eastern element bike there the best qulity. I have a red line bike and i hit ramps from 3 feet and landed on tree stups with the rim and the rim is in 100% condition and no wabuling. ooh yeah my redline bike is called a rival.
7 :
Regardless of where the bike maker is based, you are very likely to get a frame manufactured somewhere in Asia. That's true for even very high priced Canadian or European brands. The "rule" is that a manufacturer can claim "made in" his country if he increases the value by 60%. To see where the big label bikes are actually made, check out http://allanti.com/page.cfm?PageID=328 HTH
8 :
Check out this site. It will answer all of your questions. Good luck. http://allanti.com/page.cfm?PageID=328 Oh, I see someone else already gave you this link. Sorry.

to me giant has no competition. they simply the best bikes for the money

Howcome many European nations don't have laundromats?

Howcome many European nations don't have laundromats?
I recall this being true in Italy and I think much of Germany and Austria don't have self-service laundromats. You have to pay someone to do your laundry and 20 years ago it was an arm and a leg. I think I paid 15 dollars for one basket full of clothes. I would think some enterprising businessman could make money just off of the tourists and students who want a laundromat.

Why do Governments "Borrow" money from Banks at interest to pay for Wars?

Why do Governments "Borrow" money from Banks at interest to pay for Wars?
The UK Independent of 9 Nov 2009, carried an article entitled Remembrance: 'At least we knew what we were fighting for in 1944', and invited comment. 'At least we knew what we were fighting for in 1944'. Did we really know?? Only a very few knew what was being fought for and why. It was not for "Freedom and Democracy". Wars are deliberately brought about by rich and powerful people, for the sole purpose of their becoming more rich and more powerful. It is for the same people, and for the same reason, that present wars are being fought. It is those same rich and powerful people who send our young men and women to die. And it is all for the profit of those same rich and powerful people. It was the same in 1939. Nothing has changed. The rich and powerful people don't fight, but they send our red-blooded youth as cannon fodder, to die for their gain, and their gain alone. And where do our governments get the money to finance these wars of aggression? They borrow it from the banks, of course. And just exactly where do these banks [which are owned by those rich and powerful people] get the money to loan to our governments, by which loans they put our governments, meaning us ordinary citizens, in their debt?? All while charging usurious rates of interest on their loans to our government? Precisely. meaning precisely, where does the money come from?? It is created out of thin air, at the very moment it is accepted by our government as a loan. Quotations below verify this statement. Those same rich and powerful people control the media in all its forms, so that you and I are not told the truth, but are told what they want us to think, which they, themselves have boldly stated at times. WW2, started by us in 1939, was brought about by those same rich and powerful people, because they were not able compete with Germany in the business of manufacturing and world trade. They realized that they would shortly lose both power and money, because Germany was outclassing them in quality and production in the world markets. The love of money is the root of all evil. - The Bible "The very idea of a government that can create money for itself, allowing banks to create money that the government then borrows, and pays interest on, is so preposterous that it staggers the imagination." - William Hixson, Canadian Economist "Once a nation parts with the control of its credit and money, it matters not who makes the nation's laws. Usury, once in control, will wreck any nation. Until the control of the issuance of currency and credit is restored to government, and recognized as its most conspicuous and sacred responsibility, all talk of sovereignty, of parliament, and of democracy, is idle and futile." - William Lyon Mackenzie King, Prime Minister of Canada "I care not what puppet is placed on the throne of England, to rule the Empire. The man that controls Britain's money supply controls the British Empire. And I control the money supply. " - Baron Nathan Mayer Rothschild London financier, Rothschild bank "The study of money, above all other fields in economics, is one in which complexity is used to disguise truth or to evade truth, not to reveal it. The process by which banks create money is so simple the mind is repelled. With something so important, a deeper mystery seems only decent." - John Kenneth Galbraith Canadian economist, Harvard professor. "The issue which has swept down the centuries and which will have to be fought sooner or later is the people versus the banks." - John Emerich Edward Dalberg Acton, First Baron Acton of Aldenham "When a government is dependent upon bankers for money, they and not the leaders of the government control the situation, since the hand that gives is above the hand that takes. Money has no motherland; financiers are without patriotism and without decency; their sole object is gain." - Napoleon Bonaparte, French emperor "It is well enough that people of the nation do not understand our banking and monetary system, for if they did, I believe there would be a revolution before tomorrow morning." - Henry Ford, Founder of Ford Motor Company So, can someone please tell me WHY do we continue with this OBVIOUS con?

These same people you talk about, rule us, teach us, bribe us, and enslave us. I think we are taught from an early age to "love" the government. This is why it is so hard for most people to accept the truth of your post. It is a hard truth and an ugly truth. Most people would rather live in the continued fantasy of: Freedom, TV, and technology. Speaking of the hard, ugly truth. We are slaves to these rulers. We are given the illusion of freedom, not because our rulers want us to be free, but because slaves who think they are free produce more than slaves who know they are not. It is very hard to approach our fellow slaves with these truths, because its not that our masters would beat us if we spoke them, but our fellow slaves will attack us trying to deny them.

Wow...go take a course in History! I guess when the NAZI's are continually bombing your cities you should just wait until you have the money saved up before you defend yourself. LOL!

Our economy is sustained by the military industrial complex. We therefore need to keep pumping money into the war machine to keep our country afloat. It is well known that the U.S. outspends all of its proposed enemies on defense x10. What's less known is that defense contractors are among the largest employers in the U.S.. Until we transition away from a military economy, we will continue to beg, borrow and steal to keep filling the pockets of laborers, executives and shareholders.
4 :
Our government created income tax temporarily to help cover the money they borrowed for the war. I'm still waiting to hear from them that they have the loan paid off and we no longer have to pay income tax.

My bf is studying abroad in Germany for 1 year, he wants me to come with?
I have a job, don't make that much money, I'm in school too, part time. He is a mechanical engineering student and is going to be studying abroad in Lubeck Germany for 1 year to get his masters. We've been dating for 3 yrs, 9 months and he wants me to go with him, drop everything here and come along. Do you think this is selfish for him to ask me to do this? I won't be able to work or go to school while im there cuz im a foreigner and don't know german. Any ideas, should i go or no. I'm pretty sure we are going to get married, he said he wants to propose while we are there. I'm 24, he is 25

2 :
Is it selfish? I don't think so. You don't appear to have any permenent connections here--you don't have a "career" but just a job, you only go to school part-time, you're not taking care of a child, etc. Why not drop everything and go along! So long as there will be enough money for you both to live on while you're there, it's a great opportunity to live in a foreign country for a year. As far as the language goes, if you work hard at it, you can have a good baseline by the time you leave, and if you surround yourself with German all the time, you'll probably be close to fluent by Christmas (if you go there in September). Plus, something like 80% of Germans know at least rudimentary English... so you'll be able to communicate. (Whether you will be able to work or not, who knows... that's all about immigration laws. However, you should be able to go to school... there are a good number of English programs in Germany... or you can always take classes via correspondence or over the Internet!)

If you really want to be with him i think you should go with him. You'll hve been together for 4 years now. That alot of time, i am sure you dnt want to sacrifice that, because alot of woman are in Germany. I think you should go it would be a great experience.

Has anyone heard the harping about the US not giving enough foreign aid money and Iran giving more the the US?

Has anyone heard the harping about the US not giving enough foreign aid money and Iran giving more the the US?
US levels for foreign aid fall short of this goal (the US currently ranks last among the world's wealthiest countries at about 0.1 percent of GNP.) However, in absolute amounts, the United States is currently the world's top donor of economic aid, providing $16.254 billion in 2003 according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. In 2001, the United States gave $10.9 billion, Japan $9.7 billion, Germany $4.9 billion, the United Kingdom $4.7 billion, and France $4.3 billion. As a percentage of GNP, however, the top donors were Denmark, Norway, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, and Sweden. The Netherlands (pop. 16.3 million) gave $3.2 billion in 2001 — almost a third of what America contributed. We are funding a war against terror, forgive us world for coming in a little shy with the give away money. We are trying to make the world safe, democratic and free. Kudos to all those countries who were generous to give so much, the world needs you.

If I were in charge, I wouldn't issue dime one to any country. Since America is such a big bully and the cause for all the world's ailments, then no one will mind billions of American dollars being taken and put right back where it belongs...the taxpayer's wallets. Why didn't you check and see the amounts given to charity by AMERICAN CITIZENS. You anti-Americans really piss me off. Your FACTS are slanted and do not take into account charities and private donations. IF YOUR ANTI-AMERICAN butt would check those facts, you'd see Americans donate cash (as well as other aid and personnel) second to none!
3 :
we are not fighting a war on terror. terrorism is a tactic, not an enemy. bush is currently using terrorism by routinely dropping bombs on civilians and authorizing the torture of innocents. bush is not a president, he is a criminal, a gangster. he is draining our treasury and destroying our reputation. Almost all the money we give, anyway, is tied to our foreign policy goals. We have wasted a billion a week on bush's war based on lies. We certainly had the money to give ourselves a decent health care system and help the world. Instead, bush is using our treasury to sow terror around the world and keep all his buddies in the big money.
4 :
What is your point? These number do not include the military support we give either. I'm cool with what we do. No more needs to be given out.
5 :
In terms of the war on terror, the USA is working hard but not smart. America's foreign policy(which costs almost nothing) makes America the primary target for terrorists check the the link from which I am quoting: "More important, saying that Israel and the US are united by a shared terrorist threat has the causal relationship backwards: the US has a terrorism problem in good part because it is so closely allied with Israel, not the other way around. Support for Israel is not the only source of anti-American terrorism, but it is an important one, and it makes winning the war on terror more difficult. There is no question that many al-Qaida leaders, including Osama bin Laden, are motivated by Israel’s presence in Jerusalem and the plight of the Palestinians. Unconditional support for Israel makes it easier for extremists to rally popular support and to attract recruits." http://www.lrb.co.uk/v28/n06/mear01_.html

Wouldnt it be a shame that the US would actually spend money where we could really use it, at home? When is this country going to wake up and spend money on its cities, health care, needy and to create jobs? U2's Bono allways lambasting the US and UK for not giving more money to other countries. Thats all well and good, but what about our own country? Look around Bono and people like you, we need to take care of ourselves and stop giving it all away!! You obvously dont know this country very well.

You know I get so tired of statistics you can prove or disprove any point, people make up their on and no one cares or notices.I for one am very proud of this country's humanitarian efforts around the world, and I wonder why other country's take so much pleasure in discounting what we do.We are the first name they call when in need ,but who helps this country. We are the most maligned and least respected, then leave us alone, don't take our money and then spit in our face.I am very proud and fortunate to be an American.I am proud of the American people as a whole, I am not proud of the people that live here ,feed off the government, squander its resources, disrespect its flags, then bad mouth the USA. Say anything you want about GWB,say anything you desire about liberals, conservatives, etc,if you don't like it then vote for change but do not talk badly about this country that I hold so dear.. .stepping off my soap box.......
