do you think we should legalise all drugs from pot to speed, whats your thoughts?
Prohibition does not prevent cannabis use by children or the mentally ill, the vulnerable populations whom we supposedly want to protect. Instead, cannabis prohibition makes it more difficult for parents, patients, society, doctors and law enforcement to control cannabis use. The Drug War makes honest education about cannabis impossible, and leaves cannabis users marginalized in ways that make their lives more stressful. This stress is unhealthy for everyone, but it is certainly most damaging to people with schizophrenia. Cannabis prohibition is not merely a failure; it is a counterproductive fraud that is harming those whom we claim we want to protect. There are currently more teens in treatment centers for marijuana in comparison to those admitted for alcohol. Only an idiot would have to ask why alcohol is not the no#1 problem after all alcohol is perfectly legal ( If you are 21.) That is due to responsible people handling alcohol by way of the carding and id system. Contraband markets make no age disgression. One of several reason they don’t legalize drugs is not because of the harm of drugs, But people would lose more money in the long run. This would mean a seedy mess for the pot smoker to clean up and produce undesirable future generations of smokeable cannabis. If anything, Hemp farming would be anti marijuana and would harm any outdoor pot farming within a one mile radius of any hemp farm. Too many drunks and disorganized people out there now. Don't need any more people on the roads under any influence
2 :
No to legalization, Alcohol is the best argument against it.
3 :
Absolutely not!! Drugs destroys people's lives, it destroys brain cells (once brain cells are destroyed they will never grow back), destroys families, drugs cause an undo burden on the over-taxed health system, drugs causes people to lose hope for the future, and most important is the fact that drugs kill just don't kill the user/pusher either but drugs also kill innocent by-standers too. Medical marijuana is another story. Marijuana; under very strict supervision of a doctor; can relieve glaucoma, relieve pain associated with cancer/ Aids, and increases hunger in cancer patients while decreasing nausea. If they did make medical marijuana legal, marijuana might just stay out of the hands who what to do nothing more but abuse it. The reason being is because the hospitals might be willing to pay more for it than what most casual users, especially teenagers, might be willing to pay for. Medical marijuana is the ONLY drug that should be legalized and for every reason that I stated in the previous paragraphs. Besides that, if you are dying from cancer/ Aids, your only concern is to live the last few days pain free and medical marijuana has been proven to improve the lives of people that is dying from cancer/ Aids better than any other method available.
4 :
Well man it takes forever to read all that but here is what I think. I think that if Marijuana was legal then I wouldnt be able to afford it and it would be subject to inflation and maybe the way we handle weed is fine for the moment, but small personal use smokers shouldnt even be bothered. Its people who are growing seperate houses full of the stuff and not having any discretion over who its being sold to that is a drag about the pot. But there is far worse out there, I have seen people who smoke pot and are able to function and maintain just fine. I have seen people messed up on meth, speed, alcahol, cocaine, and other such drugs who dont pay their bills and only care about themselves, the dealers are just as money and power hungry, lets take care of the major narcotics that are destroying our society and tearing families apart, making them homeless! Lets address those issues before we study Marijuana and small time growers or users and crack down on the crack dealers and meth labs, if you really want to make a difference in society.!!! I want my kids to grow up in a better world, where they dont have to worry about gunshots or drugs!!!!!
5 :
Yes, I do. If we want to get the prison overcrowding to end quickly then legalize drugs such as pot, cocaine, and meth for "personal use only. Take the crime out of these crimes and we let people decide what they choose to put into their own bodies. If they OD and die, who is going to miss them - except their parents and kids?
6 :
I don't use drugs, but the fact is people do and always will. If you legalise it, you at least eradicate the dealer, lessen crime and because you identify the user you can help them more easily.
7 :
Alcohol and Nicotine are both drugs. If marijuanna is to stay illegal because its a drug and destroys lives, then all alcoholic drinks need to be illegalized as well since alcohol destroys far more lives than marijuana. Same with all tobbacco products We already tried illeagalizing alcohol, it was called prohibition and we found out is doesn't work Government isnt there to protect us from ourselves, thats our job. Legalize It!
8 :
There are so many reasons why it would be better to end prohibition but there are very powerful people with a vested interest in the status quo. You mentioned the pharmaceutical industry. They would also loose a lot of money if the medical benefits of cannabis could be exploited. The drug traffickers, who are the ones who directly benefit from prohibition, must have friends in very high places.

Anyone have some decent ideas on making money from home?

Anyone have some decent ideas on making money from home?
Hey, all. I'm living with my parents, stuck out in a rural Canadian area with no car and no way of getting into town consistently for a full-time job. I'll be starting my first semester of online college in a month or so, and I'm looking for a job that I can do online for some extra money, hopefully enough to move into the city and go to Germany for my next birthday... Any help would be awesome, since all I can come up with on google sounds so incredibly scammy. If it helps, I'm very proficient with typing and computers in general, and the program I'm entering is in Information Technology... Thanks, Sean

Since you don't have a car, it will be difficult. I'd suggest, if you have some seed money, to open an online trading account and work the stock market for awhile - become a day trader. You could make some good money that way, and you don't have to leave your house. However, you could lose money too, so be careful. Flipping. If you have a friend with a car (assuming he or she will help you), you could start buying things from garage sales and craigslist ads, and then resell them for a profit using eBay. Audio equipment is a good money maker on eBay. I once bought a vintage preamplifier for $100 from an ad on craigslist, and then resold it on eBay to an individual in Russia for over $1,000 USD. Turntables, Amplifiers, Preamps, Speakers, CD Players are all good if you find the correct make and model. Some valuable brands are Marantz, Sansui, Luxman, Pioneer, Adcom, Acoustic Research, Carver, and many others. Do some research and you will find the rare ones that command high selling prices, and those others that are junk.

selling things is the only legit way to make money

there are a number of sites where you can register and do some projects for people who are asking for them. you can get paid for anything. the best site I can think of for you to check out is elance.com If you are interested in more ... check the link below maybe it will give you some extra ideas. Do you think the United States should change the current campaign policies?

Do you think the United States should change the current campaign policies?
A German friend of mine studying abroad here in the U.S. told me that in Germany, all candidates are given a certain amount of money they can use for their campaign. This prevents candidates from receiving money for campaigns, thus eliminating the possibility that the person who wins is the one who had the most money for campaigning. This restriction also prevents candidates from passing laws that favor those sponsoring him/her. Do you think the U.S. should adopt this policy of having all candidates receive the same money to make it "fair" for all?

While I'm sure every system has it's corruption, I think anything is better than what's going on now. So, yeah, it'd be great to try.
2 :
That would be OK depending on who decides which candidates to fund, would need to be by petition I bet, and then you are right back to who has the money to get the petitions out and signed. A limit on the number of ads a candidate is allowed to put in publications and on TV might work. I've heard it suggested that a mug-shot style photograph (or worse a passport photo) of each candidate and a written statement not to exceed 1000 words should be put in the sample ballot and no other advertising allowed. I like that one. .
3 :
I think it's a great idea! Clean election laws should be passed. No more special interest money flowing, but I'd still allow the average american to support a candidate by limiting contributions as they do now. That means a CEO of a company can't give any more than what I can give. Under current law, a CEO can give his personal contributions but at the same time can also provide money through his company's PAC funds. Basically doubling what I can give. Funds distributive to a candidate should be limited, but is match base on contributions received by individuals only. He can sink all his own money into it, but that money is not matched. As a union member of a national union that supports these types of election reforms, it gives the power back to the people. People need to be able to voice themselves through contributions!
4 :
That money has to come from somewhere.
5 :
Will never happen in the US. Too much money.power, and influence on the line for the government to change election laws that dramatically.

Okay, I have ADHD so I couldn't read through the whole thing, but I think I agree with what you're trying to say. I think marijuana should be legalized and I don't even use it. I just think that the government could be benefiting from taxing it and it would be safer because it would have to meet standards in order to be sold. I also think that marijuana is less addictive than things like alcohol and pain pills. I used to smoke marijuana (when I was in high school) like 4 times a day and when I quit, I didn't have any withdrawals or anything. That's not true with alcohol or other drugs, including prescription ones. So I just don't understand why marijuana is so taboo?
4 :
I understand what you are saying and you have some truths and a good Idea. I have epilepsy and have been forced to take synthetic drugs in order to keep the seizures under control. However, I am discriminated against by society and my family because of the effects of the medication that pharmacy would prefer me to take.
5 :
I definately do not agree with legalizing drugs, and I also think that tobacco should be prohibited.
6 :
Drugs are for those that can't deal with reality. Drug using is a <cop> out. Just my thought.
7 :
You have really done your home work on this one. Our country has literally "gone to pot" since drugs came into our culture full force in the 1960's. Drugs have caused lives to be shattered and children to be abused. Stupidity, ignorance, greed and love of power may be the driving forces behind drugs but to legalize more drugs would cause the down fall of an already shaky nation.
8 :
Sounds like you want the drugs legalized to make your job easier. We have enough problems with druggies in America. if it was legal, can you imagine the chaos? there are to many impaired drivers on the road, now. would you want a surgeon who was high opening your chest? would you want a plumber who was high installing your plumbing? would you want a judge who was high deciding your fate? would you want a cook who was high preparing your meals. would you want a day care worker who was high taking care of your children? etc etc........

What kind of aid are other countries providing?

What kind of aid are other countries providing?
It is nice to see that ordinary or rich(hard working)people give donations to much needed causes like this. But why do we have to give? Our governments have the money to provide, they have plenty of food surplus available. Just look at the statistics. We are definitely being over taxed and that over taxation needs to go to the people in those countries in poverty. The world pays billions and billions to kill people and to provide for their interests, why dont they spend it on saving lives? Sadaam killed a few hundred or a few thousand but in Africa I saw 600,000 bodies floating in the river and we did little to help that. I am also sick and tired of getting stuff in the mail from organizations that continue to need donations for this and that, especially for cancer. I had cancer in 1980 and the physicians said a cure would be available 10 years from that date. Everything is about trying to get money from the people actually need the money to make a good living, and to get additional media attention to the people that have the money to travel all around the country. Money money money...what happened to our real hearts. By the way I thank Walter Reed Army Medical Center and the VA Hospital at Loma Linda(doctors, nurses, all staff) for curing my cancer(like Lance Armstrong's) when I was stationed in Germany in 1979. To this date I still do not have an answer on how I got this cancer but a doctor in Germany said it was common over there....WHAT!? Finally, security is a very good thing and we should do all means posssible to support this as long as our freedom and our own privacy is not violated (the Constitution). Keep up the good work, and I thank you so much CHER for getting better helments for the troops(god bless them).

When aid goes to a country like Kenya (since you asked in the Kenyan section), very few benefit from it. There's so much going on out there (In Africa) and very few out here care. (That's the truth) I lost all hope on those save this save that organizations when I saw a documentary on how some American Doctor working with Cancer research went to India and got the doctors there to tell the sufferers that they had a new drug and it was free all they had to do was sign a document. (These people were illiterate) Turns out that they were actually doing experiments with these drugs and many continue to die needlessly due to this. It's good that they exposed this thing in India but nobody exposes what happens in Africa. Richer countries dump their waste (unfit for human use) in these countries and since the people there are so loving and accommodating, so gullible they don't really get to know what hit them until it does. One time they showed how Benson and Hedges was aiming their free cigarette try outs at the youth (from 12 year olds) in Gabon. What is unacceptable in their country they take to the African Nations. I personally feel bitter about the situation in Africa. Nothing is stopping Africa but Africa itself. The day we all realize this as Africans, stop relying on what others dictate to us and really care about our own, we will have a new dawn.

Is it against the law to sell soft drinks at a garage sale?

Is it against the law to sell soft drinks at a garage sale?
I am having a garage sale next weekend and before I go out and buy a bunch of coke and sprite, I want to know if it is okay for me to sell soft drinks at a concession stand at my garage sale. I live in Germany and I think it may not be okay to sell US drinks to the Germans in my village. If not, is there anything that I am allowed to sell? I would love to make some extra money next weekend.

I'm not sure about another country. I live in Florida, USA and to do a garage sale we need to get a permit at our City Hall. I would say ask some city/village authority that way you can have a garage sale free of problems. Hope it goes well!!
2 :
No one in either the US or Germany is going to care if you sell a few sodas one weekend. Law enforcement agencies have bigger fish to fry than that.
3 :
As long as you are selling unopened cans or bottles you are OK. You'll need a health department permit (and likely a food hander license) if you pour soda into cups from another container.

Why is the government making it harder to go to Canada?

Why is the government making it harder to go to Canada?
I can understand the desire for border security in Mexico, but that's because there is rampant illegal immigration in Mexico. However, I do not understand why the government is trying to keep people out of Canada. There is no illegal immigration problem involving Canadians. Why would Canadians want to illegally immigrate here when their country is pretty good already? The only conceivable reason Canadians would come to America (other than tourism) would be for decent health care, something they don't get in their own country. Why is the DHS wasting so much time and money trying to make it harder for people to go to Canada? Could it be that they're trying to keep the American people in America, just like the East Germans tried to keep their people in East Germany?

They're not trying to keep people out of Canada, it's coming back in that they check your passport. Also, it's not Canadians they are looking for, it's to make it harder for terrorists.
4 :
I think the goal is to keep terrorists out of the US that would enter through Canada.
5 :
Canadians do in fact enter the US illegally. Just nowhere near the scale of those from Mexico and all points south. One reason would be the Socialized Health Care system in Canada, the very same disaster Hillary wants to bestow on all Americans...nice thought, huh?
6 :
The government has no say in getting into Canada. The Canadian government does. The US is making it harder to get (back) into the US from Canada for as they say security reasons concerning terrorism.
7 :
There are people sneaking across from Canada too. The US and Canada both have laws that limit the immigration from certain countries. Some times its easier to get into Canada than the US so they do that and sneak across from there. Closing 1 border and leaving the other open is just a bad idea. Not all immigrants come through Mexico.
8 :
Terrorist have tried to come in through Canada before. Plus there are illegal aliens in this country that are Canadian. I am sorry you didnt know that.
9 :
You can leave without a passport, but you can't get back in. Its not the going, its the returning. Their trying to crack down on terrorists and the only way to do that is to completely close the borders down requiring a passport upon re-entry.
10 :
Trying to make it harder for terrorists to come from Canada! You should reread that article!
11 :
the canadian government is getting tired of amerians running to canada -- do you have any idea how many american ex-patriots live in canada now? the canadian government just wants to make sure you are only going on vacation and not planning on moving. you are making it a lot weirder situation than it is.
12 :
According to my point of view the Canadian Govt want to become Canada the moderen one so thats why they used some requirements while applying for imigration but it is not very tough criteria .Every educated person can apply for immigration throgh skilled base visa.
13 :
Two words: Ahmed Ressam He was a terrorist who planned to blow up Los Angeles International Airport on New Year's Eve in 1999. He was caught coming into the U.S. from Canada at Port Angeles, WA. And it is not that hard to get to Canada... like someone else said, they just want to make sure you are a citizen on your way back in. Passports are pretty ironclad, but last time I checked you can still get in (via land) with a birth certificate and photo ID.
14 :
The new passport requirements for reentry into the US certainly do make travel harder into Canada. They also will also cause significant harm to small boarder businesses. The paranoid and militant feel that tightening the boarder on the South will only lead to terrorists coming down from the North. But if we try to close every security gap, we'll likely bankrupt ourselves, turn our country into a totalitarian state and certainly make a lot of rich industrialists richer. The electric fence proposed for the Northern boarder sounds ludicrous: a bunch of cameras on posts. Seems like a bunch of nine year olds with bb guns could defeat it. And at a cost you can hardly comprehend only to be made obsolete by next year's technology. I get very angry just thinking about all this. "Idiots" is the term that always comes to mind. All these expenditures just isolate the US from the world and exasperate its troubles for very questionable and temporary gains in security. .
15 :
Maybe they're preparing to bring back the draft. Last time a lot of folks escaped the draft by fleeing to Canada.
16 :
The changes passed by the American government have no effect on people going TO Canada. The intent is to increase border security to keep out terrorists. Terrorist can fly to Canada just as easy as they can fly to Mexico. The United States does not put limitations on people LEAVING the US. They put limitations on people entering the US.
17 :
Hello, All countries retaliate in kind when stringent rules come in to play. The irony for Americans iis that they will need a passport and visa to visit their own country, Alaska in future. Canada also has had her share of illegal Americans from the draft dodgers of the late 60's to those American panhandlers in Toronto who beat a middle aged fellow to death a few weeks back when he did not give them spare change. As for terrorists they are not going to send some illiterate peasant from the suburbs of Khandahar and fly him overseas to America with a bomb. So far all terrorists have been legal immigrants, citizens or on student visas so tough security would not have made a difference. In Canada herself those caught in the big plot last year were Canadian citizens, in the London subway bombings; second generation British citizens and the Scottish plotters were landed immigrant doctors brought in cause of a health worker shortage in Britain. I hear all sorts of horror stories about Canadian health care on US channels we get here. I never have had a problem; my wife has had cancer 15 years back and is still here and "insured" forever; she just survived a car accident that would have been a 200k plus bill but did not cost us a red cent and she pulled through 100% so I'm not complaining; why are others who do not live here and go through it? Anyway if border crossing gets to inconvienient for me and many others I know, we'll just say piss on Florida, California, Hawaii and the south. We'll go to Cuba, South and central America or many parts of Mexico where the drinks, hotels, meals are much cheaper and the muchachitas so much friendlier! Cheers, Michael Kelly

Because Atta came through Canada and Canada has much looser asylum laws than we do, for initial presence. Also, everyone might come back speaking funny, eh? However, it is just a matter of getting a card. Once you do it, it should be easy again, for a Canadian CITIZEN.

Your too young to work sorry
2 :
Since you're only 10 and too young to get a job out in the work world, I would recommend talking to your parents about possible jobs you can do around the house. You could set a dollar amount for each job. For example: Vaccuum the house for $3, wash a car for $5, set the table every night for $3 a week, etc. Depending on how well you know your neighbors, you could talk to them about helping out with their chores too. If your parents see you're really serious about saving money for your trip, perhaps they'd be willing to match however much you save. Good luck, enjoy your trip!
3 :
You can get a paper route, or do extra chores around the house if your earn an allowance. Fall is coming up, so you can rake leaves for your neighbors. As you start to earn money have your parents assist you with opening a savings acct to put the money in and you can yearn some interest on it. Plus this way it will be out of sight out of mind and you'll have a better chance of actually saving it and not spending it on candy or toys, or games.... Good luck I hope you can make your trip.

Would it make economic sense to move from USA to China?

Would it make economic sense to move from USA to China?
I know the USA is a great country, but from a money-making perspective. It looks like China is what USA used to be like when the US economy was booming and we had thriving industries in America, which are now gone forever. 1) China manufactures almost everything. 2) China has high-speed rail systems and public works. 3) Chinese services in America are very price-competitive. (e.g. Chinatown Buslines operates busses by the hour Washington, DC to New York City ($17.50 each way). $15 each way to Boston. Chinese are economically more and more efficient by cutting costs. 4) China for the first year in history, purchase more automobiles than the United States, and they are surpassing Germany and Japan in auto production. 5) China controls everything now, including the value of the USA currency. 6) China also does not need to invest in the Defense budget of the USA because nobody wants to fight a country with 1.3 Billion subjects. 7) China has more manpower than the USA and far more growth potential, because there are much fewer labor laws, no unionization of workers, no minimum wage, much more cost efficient at pretty much everything. The NEW USA is happening right now in China. In China, it is like the way things used to be in the United States. In China, if you want to manufacture automobiles, manufacure steel, manufacture computers, manufacture clothing, manufacture headphones, manufacture DVD machines....there's factories everywhere you look...all the factories that were once USA factories. Shouldn't we just move to China? china everyone is Chinese, there's no subsidies for minorities, there's no real diversity, it's just everybody's one....they are Chinese

China is so cheap. I would be rich if I lived there. Just go, probably the best idea for long term investment.
2 :
Yes. You've pretty much stated every reason that matters already. In addition, they have a powerful military, loads of people, great industry, and own much of America's debt. If China wanted to, it could take us over militarily or economically. Better to be on the Chinese side before that happens.
3 :
Bye bye! Please take as many liberals with you as you possibly can!
4 :
China manufactures almost everything. It's actually American businesses that move to China because of the low taxes. China also does not need to invest in the Defense budget of the USA because nobody wants to fight a country with 1.3 Billion subjects tHat is their Army, they do not have a Navy. China has more manpower than the USA and far more growth potential, because there are much fewer labor laws, no unionization of workers, no minimum wage, much more cost efficient at pretty much everything. Now the U.S has all of those things, and our economy sucks. You think the 2 may correlate?
5 :
What an ignorant idea. The Chinese government is oppressive, no amount of economic stability is worth one's freedom.
6 :
China is still a communist nation so if you like having your personal life constantly regulated by Big Brother, feel free.
7 :
What you forgot to mention: Most people in China are struggling right now with money and the chances of moving up in your status are much smaller than in the U.S. China is WAY overcrowded. China has a very overcontrolling government. I think I'll live with all my liberties in the U.S., thank you!
8 :
You would not be happy there. In China you would be considered stupid, weak, petty, and inferior.

About how much would this trip through Europe cost?

About how much would this trip through Europe cost?
I want to start in the Netherlands followed by Germany, Czech Republic, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, France, Spain and end with Portugal, then fly back to Beijing. I currently live and teach English in China. I make good money so I am not worried about it being expensive, but I have only been to England, so I have no idea how much a real trip through Europe would cost. Any experienced travelers on here that can give me a rough idea how much it would cost(transportation, hotels, food, sites, etc.)?

It of course depends on what kind of hotels and restaurants you use. Going of a tight budget will cost a minimum of $100/day. You could easily spend several times that. Get a guidebook that covers the places you will be.
2 :
i would guess about 1000

Why are child molester tourists to poor countries more likely to be from Germany than anywhere else?

Why are child molester tourists to poor countries more likely to be from Germany than anywhere else?
When I was in Guatemala and in Thailand I can say I saw what was the most common form of making money was Child Prostitution. Even though I was disgusted by this practice in both countries I could not do anything about it, the Pedophile pimps where protected by local greased off cops. What made me even more angry and disgusted was seeing that the top customers were foreign tourists from several other countries (USA, UK, Germany, Russia, and Japan to mention a few). But out of all the countries I can say they were mostly German. I mean if I had to throw a number out I would say anywhere between 25% to 40% of the customers were from Germany. What gives? I tried to find information online but it is a bit limited. So is this how Germany keeps its numbers of Child Molesters down, by molesting kids in poorer countries? I do not get it, how is this treated in Europe?

Perhaps the courts give them one way tickets to asia. i am sure that countries keep records of prosecutions but is the police are involved in the crime perhaps a lot more is corrupt too. Did you photograph any of them/ does germany prosecute Tourist pedos as if they had committed the acts at home? Australia does, perhaps that is a big disincentive. Or you embassies are paying the police for free passes.
2 :
I'd like to see proof of this without just throwing it out there like that. But, Germans make up a large percentage of tourists everywhere because they have a lot of holiday and vacation time and the money and means to travel.
3 :
I would have to say that the cops in this case just do not care about child molesters and let them run loose screwing up kids' lives. They tend to treat child molesters in Europe as objects of subjection towards chemical castration.

Was Nazi Germany's establishment of Hitler as a 'supreme ruler' an example of a cult of personality?

Was Nazi Germany's establishment of Hitler as a 'supreme ruler' an example of a cult of personality?
I'm just rather curious- the whole 'Seig heil, all money and power to Hitler' thing kind of makes it seem like he was pretty arrogant at least, but I'm wondering if that was just a simple trait redolent of a cult of personality or the entire Nazi Germany theme was constructed as a cult of personality. {{Um, by the way, sorry if my phrasing is bad. :D}} Thanks a bunch!

arrogant? he was a meglomaniac. It is definately an example of the 'Cult of personality'.
2 :
it was a cult of personality, of course it was, many totalitarian regimes are also personality cults. With Hitler it wasn't really money what he was aiming for (for ex he paid for some of his own stuff, he didn't loot things for himself like Goring did, etc) but about the power, he wanted power, he wanted to be a great ruler of a great nation ,he wanted to establish himself as the greatest leader of the most powerful, successful, orderly nation. The Nazi Party would have probably had much less of an appeal without Hitler. Sure, in those days, with those problems, if there had been someone else instead of Hitler but with the same plans(socially speaking) maybe they would have managed to get a majority but I doubt that the party would have risen to the extent Hitler helped it rise. Hitler was one of those people who, at least at that time and maybe inexplicably so to us today, had a special type of charisma and magnetism especially when he held one of his speeches so the whole regime was constructed around him both cause he was the supreme leader and because image wise he was the most magnetic of them all. It was definitely a cult of personality.
3 :
Yes Hitler developed a cult of personality where all Germans must be completely loyal to him over everything else. Even in the last days when it was obvious they will lose, many stayed loyal and practically worshiped him. Many commited suicide rather than surrender so they don't be judged as being disloyal to him. Many soldiers killed anybody showing any disloyalty to Hitler in the last days.
4 :
yes,he was a power crazed fanatic and had all the qualities of a cult leader. ok, he was far from good looking, unlike jim jones, but his status lay with his position in government, and eva brown loved him despite the fact he had one ball!! so yes, cult personality all over.

How hard will it be for a 18yr old from Arizona to move to Cologne Germany?

How hard will it be for a 18yr old from Arizona to move to Cologne Germany?
I am slowly but surely learning the language. I plan on flying out to Austria and staying there for about a month with a friend and her family . Sometime in august i plan to take a train over to Cologne and stay with a friend for a while until i can find an apartment. How hard will it be for me to get a job? Ill even do like labor work i dont care what i do as long as i make some money. I will have about 4000 euros when i arrive. I also looked up and all i need is a residency permit to get a job and i am soon going to Los Angeles to get it at a registration office. My great grandfather was born in Germany as well but i dont think that will really matter since he is a great. Should i stay here in Arizona? Or should i follow my dream and be with some really good friends of mine in Germany?

You should definitely go to Germany for the experience! Please keep in mind that most northern Europeans are narrow-minded, racist, nationalistic, stuck up and completely anti-American. This will definitely effect you being able to get a job. Finding an apartment will be no problem because Europeans think all Americans are rich or are willing to go so far into debt that we will give them their money regardless. Oh and be prepared to be treated like an idiot, constantly. It won't be as hard as you think to relocate.
2 :
You need a visa and money
3 :
It will be difficult to get a work visa and if your great grand father had citizenship, that wouldn't be enough for you to get citizenship rights. I heard that if your grand parent was a citizen, then it might be possible, but they have a strict cut off after that. Otherwise there would be many Americans who could easily get citizenship. The best bet would be to have a German company sponsor you. If you worked at say "Adidas," they send American workers over there all the time. But to just get a job, would be working illegally. You would have to do it under the table. Good luck though. I'm jealous. My German professor komt aus Köln. (Came from Cologne) I've always wanted to go there and see the famous Hohe Dom Kirche in Köln. Guten Tag und aufwiedersehen!

I want to make the right call in my relationship - should I move in with my boyfriend?

I want to make the right call in my relationship - should I move in with my boyfriend?
Here is the context - I am 22 and a senior in college, although I took a break this semester to make some money. I am going back next fall most likely. My boyfriend is 28 and a successful software engineer, and has a masters in computer science. We've been dating six months and are very in love with one another. We just spent 3 weeks together in Switzerland and Germany where we stayed with his family and I absolutely love them and had an amazing time. He enjoys my family as well and they love him too. He enriches my life in every way, and I can see a very long future with him. He feels strongly about me also and says I take good care of him (I love cooking for him and keeping house :P ). Currently I pay $659 a month in food and housing, which is a pretty great deal, but if I moved in with my boyfriend I would be paying much less probably. He's already paying for his apartment and food so my rent would be based on my ability to give. He mentioned $300 a month. I would also save in transportation costs, driving to and from his apartment, which is about 25 minutes from where I live now. He says it's silly to be spending all that money on food and housing since I spend virtually all of my time at his place, sleeping there every night and eating my meals there. As a student, I also don't have very much stuff, so in general, moving in wouldn't be much of a logistical problem at all. He's been wanting me to move in for a while. Neither of us have ever lived with anyone. I want to know, what sorts of things about our relationship will change if we move in together, and what do I need to consider before doing so? I am also interested in hearing personal stories about how moving in with someone worked out for you. How do I decide what's right for my relationship and for my life? What should I think about?

I would never move in with a guy unless we were married, or had set a date to be married. If you are good enough to live with, you should be good enough to marry. Living together does two things: it makes it harder to break up, and it makes you both less eager to be married because you are already acting like it. When you are ready to make a long term commitment, then you should move in together.
2 :
just move in and see how it go ! you live and learn !!
3 :
Not until a wedding date is planned and is firm. It can be a year from now, but it should not be open ended.
4 :
If I were you, I'd do it. At your own risk though. Some couples I know seemed perfect but when they moved in, all they did was argue. But the way you describe the relationship between you too, I'd probably go for it. I'm only 15, but I know alot for my age. It'd save you money, you'd be with the person you love, and you wouldnt be alone :) Goodluck!
5 :
You should move in with your boyfriend and really get to know each other before getting married and having kids! Once you get married it's almost to late to get to know each other because you will be in full stride if you relationship !Trust me there is a lot that you don't know about each other right now !It's always good to test something before you put it to full use !
6 :
Just make sure that you yourself are financially stable if something in the relationship happens.
7 :
I agree with magic 8-ball. As my mother alway said "See me and Live with me is two different things" Six months is hardly any time to REALLY get to know someone and once you two live together you are in each others personal space. Habits will rear their ugly head perhaps some you don't really like and without a firm mindset and commitment (marriage) it can easily destroy your relationship. Trust me. I'm living it now.
8 :
this is a big decision...things that will change: you will be together all the time without having the option of going back to your place and that will cause fights because you wont have your own spaces anymore your going to have to share.; if theres a fight you gotta stay there because you dont have your own place anymore...if things go south you will have to find another place because that is his place. Your not gonna be as intimate anymore because your together all the time...I honestly would wait a bit longer since youve only been together a couple of months...either that or tell him to find an apartment together so it will be yours as much as his...living together is a big adjustment and the money you save is not going to make it easier.
9 :
At this point there is no good or bad decision, you are in love right now !What ever you decide you and he will have to live with it !One good point is that you are packing light ,i.e. not a lot of stuff! You're young and you should give it a try with a open mind! at less you will be getting to know your boyfriend !So many people put a lot of instances on being married ,but you can ruin it by not knowing your mate ! You really have nothing to lose by trying because you already probably having sex !

Can America ever make Europe happy?

Can America ever make Europe happy?
We went into WW1 and then people blamed the USA for putting Germany in a position that started WW2. And yes a lot of European say this. Then we try and stay out of WW2 and just send money and supplies to the allies. We join and they get pissed at us for joining too late. We then use our money to boost Europe up after the War. They get pissed and say we are pushing our ways on them? Can America ever make Europe happy?

Nope and we shouldn't try.
2 :
No - and we really shouldn't try. The actions that we take should be with American safety and sovereignty in mind. If we try to please "them" instead of maintain our own rights and way of life... then we loose ourselves, and become them... The United States of America is absolutely the very best place in the world to live, and I am constantly stunned by people that come here (legally or not) from places that they don't want to live - and try to make the US like their old home country. Mind-boggling.
3 :
Well this is the first time I've heard the USA blamed for starting WWII. I'm British and I've travelled and worked extensively in Europe over the last 30-odd years and I've NEVER heard any European say this. All Europeans (except the French of course) unanimously blame France for starting WWII. The French insistence on draconian sanctions against Germany after WWI is what laid the foundation for Hitler's rise to power and the start of WWII.

5 :
Yes, it's very easy and worthwhile, but, no, it's probably not going to happen, even with Obama in power. Obama may very well change many things, but one things he's unlikely to change significantly is our foreign policy. Obama has already made threatening statements about Iran. Europe saw destruction in much of World War II. Entire cities were leveled. The Russians lost most of their countryside, even. Do you seriously think that these people are going to be gunning for more wars? Europe has adopted a policy of diplomacy and unity. North America is much more individualist, favoring action over words. Now, I'm not saying that one is necessarily better than the other, but when you have such radically different ways of solving problems, there's going to be some conflict. Europe is a powerful economic and military ally, and I feel that we should court them, rather than push them away. Personally, I would push for more involvement in the United Nations, joining the International Criminal Court, and signing many of the treaties that the past few administrations have declined. Will America and Europe ever see totally eye to eye? No, probably not. We have different cultures and political leanings. That's no reason to push away our allies, though. I think that if you actually LISTEN to people's rhetoric, you'll hear that they're very grateful for North America's involvement in their affairs, most of the time, and that they have legitimate concerns (at least from their point of view) for the times that have criticized us. As with any international communication, there will always be outspoken bigots, racists, nationalists, and ignorant loudmouths. Consider some of the people you've written off as cranks in America, and how they could be perceived in Europe, for example. Not everyone who speaks loudly speaks for his countrymen. I realize that I lean much more toward the pacifist, socialist, and federalist side than most Americans, but I think that we can all agree on one thing: allies are more useful than enemies.
6 :
America joined in both WWI and WW2, not to 'keep Europe happy', but out of enlightened self-interest. In the case of WWI, the immediate cause was the sinking of a (neutral) American ship, the Lusitania, by a German U-boat with the resulting deaths of many American civilians. It was finallt realised that America could no longer remain in glorious isolation and the torpedoes that sank that ship also sank the Monroe Doctrine. As to WW2, might I just mention a little incident called Pearl Harbour? Having been attacked by one of the Axis countries. the US could hardly ignore the other. As to using American money to 'boost up' Europe after the war, that was all part of the power play between the US and USSR. You've done very well out of Europe, chummy, ruining our high streets with the global capitalism of MacDonalds, Starbucks and such ghastly places. US capitalists were happy enough to grab what remained of European industry - particularly the car industry.
7 :
If you mean that Europe should just be a yes man and be happy with whatever decision the US take and follow like happy puppies I think you have a delusional idea of real life. Being allies (and we are) does not mean seeing always eye to eye, we both know that the first goal of international politics is to protect your own interests, diplomacy among allies means being able to lower your own expectancy to help reach a common goal. It doesn't mean all is love and candies. The US, being the biggest power around does try to push its ways on the rest of its allies, and with Bush team at the helm it went way further than that. We expect countries like Russia and China to be nasty bullies, we do not expect the US to imitate them. I might remind you of the anti-French campaign when many European countries refused to start a second war based on unverified say so (the famous WMD) when the first one in Afghanistan wasn't even finished. All that to say that yes we actually are pissed off with the US and their treatment of us, but we are waiting for your new government and even though it is normal for Obama to think of the US first I expect him to do better than Bush (not difficult) and be aware than allies does not mean inferiors to be treated like servants or kicked like Freedom poodles. All that said, we are more than allies, we are friends and we know it. Grumbling about allies does not mean we hate them. Preferring our own way of life over yours does not mean we hate yours. Seeing history in a different way is normal (no, we do not say you started WW2, but that a combination of events did cause it, the pulling out of the US funds from Germany being only one of those events) and if you ever open a history book from other countries you will be surprised how history you thought you knew is explained. Try it, that's an eye opener. And no, America will never make Europe happy because America will never try to make Europe happy. When you hear politicians grumbling about Europe never being happy it is because they failed to push US own interests on Europe not because they were trying to coddle us. And when you hear European politicians grumbling about the US never being happy it is because they failed to push Europe own interest on the US, not because they were trying to be nice little brothers to the US.
8 :
There is now a Western civilisation worldwide. It speaks English. But, for some time it looked as if it might be speaking French. And, for a moment, even German. but it didn't go that way. That is what all the gripe is about.
9 :
Do you really think that one country will enter a war, just to make happy another country? Sorry but this is a very naive vision of geopolitics. Read more and more about history and you will understand that there is not such a thing ever.
10 :
LOL You have a skewed view of history. Perhaps a book or two will help rather than just relying on "a lot of Europeans say this". I know a lot of Europeans ... I've lived in Europe. I've NEVER heard a European blame us for WWII. On the other hand, we're not in the business of "making Europe happy". Europe cannot even make Europe happy. It's a continent made up of many different nations with many different views -- some more favorable to the U.S. than others. As long as countries treat each other with respect -- that's all that's needed.
11 :
1) America did not join the League of Nations 2) Isolationist policies did untold damage and threatened american and world security circa early 1940s. 3) Many (Eastern) Europeans saw themselves as pawns in America's cold war games. "Better Red than dead" and all that. It would be unfair to say that america didn't "save" Europe....or at least save it from a longer war, but the threat was the Planet's, not Europe's and as the prevailing attitude in America at the time was one of isolationism, Europe bore the brunt of the aggression that would eventually have lead to either the safety of America, or a full scale Atlantic war at a later date had they failed. Either way, they should have been their earlier. Oh, and Clemenceau's guidelines for what to do with Europe were much more to do with the rise of Hitler than Wilson's. However, the biggest blame has to go on the failures of the Weimar government.

Cottage Rental Cancel; I put down half of the rental - What do they mean by Insurance?
I rented a cottage in Normandy thru a UK Based firm. I have used them in the past with no problems. But now I am being laid off(Redundant - The CEO wants to make more money). The rental firm is telling me that I can get my money back by using my insurance? What do they mean by that? I am an American living in Germany so maybe I do not understand the 'English' terms correctly? The 'Cottage' company keeps your entire rental fee when you cancel out. So if you happen to have paid more than the required deposit fee your 'Bad Luck'. If you have their insurance(only for UK citizens) then you will get SOME of your rental fee back.

I am currently studying abroad in Germany and a few days ago I got caught shoplifting. The police was called and I was asked to make a statement and fill out some forms. I am currently waiting for the judge decsions. This is the first time I have done anything like this and I am 20 years old. 1.) What are my next steps? 2.) Will this be on my record when I go home? 3.) Is there anyway I can get it off? In Germany or the US? 4.) What will my penalty be? I am a student that is not making any money. Thanks in advance for your help.

You'll go to court. I'm sure it will be on your record. The penalty just depends on their laws.
2 :
You will probably be deported and your student visa cancelled. You might face court and have a financial penalty to pay.
3 :
You wouldn't be in this position if you weren't a thief. What is wrong with people if it isn't yours and you can't afford it why did you take it? Now you want to "get off". Take your punishment and learn a lesson.
4 :
I would call the American Embassy to see what protections you have as a citizen. Other than that, you are subject to their laws and it does not matter where you are from.
5 :
it will be on your record as you are over 14 years of age. the average "fee" for shoplifting is 50 euro. the rest depends on the judge,if you are lucky he will give you a warning and lets you off. if you are not lucky then you will be sent home. if you cant pay the 50 euro you can be made to do some community work. and im sure you will have some cash because otherwise you couldnt eat, drink etc

Why does everything cost so much in Germany?

Why does everything cost so much in Germany?
I am moving to America from Germany next year and I am very excited. I visited there for one year as student and love everything about America! Everything is big and there is much more opportunity to get job and make much money. It is unbelievable how much cheaper things are in America. Petrol costs $2.58 USD per gallon but here in Germany it costs roundabout $7.18 USD per gallon! Also milk costs $2.99 USD per gallon in America but $5.60 USD per gallon here! I found one computer of the same model everything the same here in Germany it cost $2 200 USD but in America only $1 050 USD and a full DVD sound system from BOSE cost $3 480 USD in Germany and only $1 199 USD! That is no mistake. Hello? And people are more happy in America and friendly! Everyone in stores say sorry when we have accident but not in Germany. Naja. So why is this so? Why does everything cost so much more here in Europa. France it is even worser. Before I came to America I only heard how good it is but now I know!

It is because of the nazi legacy.

Higher taxes which pay for a good public service sector in Germany. There are two sides to every story, and the down side is that there is no safety net in the US. what money you save on such stuff gets spent on health insurance, mortgages and college. Despite an abundance of cheaply made chinese goods in the US, I'd gladly go back to Germany (was stationed there in the Army)
3 :
Thank the VAT. Really the difference is taxes. As was stated, it's to pay for your "better public services". There IS a safety net in the US, but that's all it is, a safety net not a nanny state. Don't worry, we're getting there faster the we realize, then you'll be paying the same high prices here too. I hope you have an excellent stay in the States! You're right, it is a great place. I love it despite it's problems.

Help with Trip to Germany?

Help with Trip to Germany?
Okay, my girlfriend and i are planning a trip from Nashville to Germany. IT will be the first two weeks of august 2011. Now, she proposed the idea that we buy our plane tickets soon. I think this is a great idea. The only problem is that i am a jobless college student with $230 to my name. However, i have a summer job that will help me make enough money to go. My question is: Is there a way i can reserve a ticket for a flight to Munich now, and pay for it when i have made enough money? also, how long is the process for getting a passport? but more importantly about the ticket. Please help. $1000 is a lot of money to charge to a credit card with no job. so. How expensive would tickets be if bought within say 3 months of the trip? 1 month?

It takes 6-8 weeks to get a passport. As far as the tickets go.... WAIT! Not only is it stupid to buy them when you cannot afford to pay for them but ticket prices have been very inflated the last 5-6 months. I would wait until January after the holidays hopefully tickets will go down and you will be better off financially.
2 :
You are right. That IS a lot of money to charge to your credit card without a means to pay it off promptly. With interest, that $1,000 ticket will easily become a $1,400 or more ticket if you carry the balance very long. I strongly advocate travel, but not when it leads to digging yourself into a hole, which is exactly what I did when I did my first backpacking/Eurailing trip around Europe. (It took me about four years to pay it all off.) Next year's flights and fares are probably not even posted yet. While it is a good idea to book in advance, especially for travel during the peak summer travel season as you propose to do, booking in January or February will probably be far enough out to assure a seat, though not a cheap seat. Check a random airline, say, Continental, to assure how far out they post flights and fares. All the airlines mimic each other so you know how soon to start looking. See if you can grab a pair of the very few cheap seats available when a flight is first posted. How stuck are you on traveling the first two weeks of August? If you can wait until after peak travel season, airfares drop appreciably. I love Europe in late September and early October, and Germany is just gorgeous at that time, and tourist season has mostly wound down so you can get in to see things without the huge lines. Unfortunately, airlines want their money up front, so you have to pay, usually within 24 hours of making your reservation if not immediately upon booking. I hope you have started your travel fund by now. Each week stash a little away. Now is a good time to make some lifestyle adjustments to save for travel. Do you or your GF smoke? Just quitting can save you up to $100 between you a week. Do you eat out, even if it's fast food? Eat in and save more. Get a part-time job, even if it's a work-study position at the library. Stash that money in the travel fund before you do or buy anything else. The good news is, you don't need your entire travel money now. You can buy your plane tickets first, then work on paying them off while saving up for your next expense, which will be your German Railpass (visit www. raileurope.com to learn about railpasses). Again, pay that expense off while saving your daily expenses, which will be about $65-75 per day for each day of your trip, assuming you will be staying in pensiones or hostels and eating inexpensively. (For example, in Munich, stay in the awesome Gasthaus across from the train station in the suburban village of Grub. It even has its own beer garden and playground! Take the commuter train from Grub into Munich to explore. Buy your dinner at the Viktuelmarkt in Munich, then eat it in the Englischer Garten park and people-watch.) Getting a passport does not take long. Generally you can have it in hand within a month of sending off your application, photos etc. Visit www.travel.state.gov for complete details on getting your passports. Good luck!

There is no reason to go ahead and purchase your airline tickets now. Take time in planning your trip, where you want to fly into and from, how long you want to stay, where you want to go, etc. Check into packages that include airfare, rail tickets or car rental, and possibly hotels. A travel agent has lots of brochures to help you out with your planning. Also, they can check on consolidator airfares for you. And never go into debt to go on vacation.

I love the USA but don't put Europe down all the way. It has its moments. The history, the culture and definitely the night life is quite nice in Germany. I lived there 31 months and I loved it. I guess the prices are extremely high compared to USA but the life has a very good quality there. I love traveling to Europe when I can. I Cr 13;8a

Yeah.. it's true.. I had been there two years ago on a family vacation.. I was shocked when I saw the price of the souvenirs that sold in German was more expensive than it was sold in America... I came back to US without nothing I bought for my friends.. I just bought a couple of things for myself.. lol My mom told me to buy the souvenirs in US coz it's cheaper than in German..

because the USA operates on "true free market" principles- dog eat dog, every man/women for themselves. "cut throat" capitalism. no lazy trade unions artificially pushing up prices! it is great unless you fall off the "rails", there is NO SAFETY NET.most US personal bankruptcies are due to medical expences.GET INSURANCE & keep your fingers crossed!!

To put it simply American pay slightly less tax but gets a lot less for it, they then have to spend more to get the same services give to Europeans but they can choose whether they want to or not. Each state decides on its sales tax in America and this price difference is also throughout the USA. Most items in American shops do not add Tax to the price until point of purchase, unlike Europe where it is already added. This can add up to 10% on the listed price, this annoys the hell out of me. Europe is more expensive for a few other reasons: - The dollar is extremely weak and as such the Euro is worth more, most corporations try and place prices to similar levels it the currency was equal. - European tax goes to social projects, like health care. Americans pay out a similar amount although it's labelled differently. - Americans have very few employment right compared to Europeans and are paid hire wages to compensate for this. Don't expect things like, Holidays (most employees don't receive a holiday in the first year and then only 5 days in the second), Sick pay, Maternity pay, etc. Lots of states are at will which means they don't even have to give you a valid reason for making you unemployed and were my fiancée work you can be fired for having 5 days of sickness in a year. - Europe funds public transport and road ways. Do not expect to find any public transport that is worth while out side of big cities. Also not all road are in good condition and very few meet with European standards. American shop worker are more polite but they can be sacked for not being so, and people do complain if they haven't met the standard. In most European stores this is seen as more annoying. The European attitude is that you came in to buy a drink not to spend 20 minutes chatting, I still dread it when someone tries to start a conversation as I just want to buy the item. Most Americans see it as the friendliness is part of the experience and it's almost as if they feel cheated if they don't get it. Trust me when you sit down at a resturant and the waitress comes over every five minutes, or a bill is placed on the table before you've finished the starter you'll start to get annoyed. I've even had a waiter ask me when I was planning to pay as he wanted to go home, it was only 9pm and I had only just got the main course.

I think that the Germany cost more because of its income tax system and the social security tax system for the German citizens' pension and unemployment insurance benefits. A German engineer told me in the 80s: " Our government is stupid but good for the poor (for German nationality only)" after I asked him about social and pension systems in Germany. Further more, the German citizens need to contribute more in the pension plan. If a German workers whose income is at the professional levels, he or she need to pays more. Upon he has completed the full contribution, he can get the full pension for the rest of his life(exactly what is the last month's salary). The American systems in import and export, trading and finance are better than the Germany. The German technicians make up to average of 37 US dollars per hour is slightly higher than the Americans. America is the number one most competitive country in this world is most pertinent answer to your question. That's why everthing is cheaper in the US.

Try Swiss, like Zurich, it's even higher there
